“Post-holiday blues” – Why do we lose motivation after a long holiday ?

After the Lunar New Year holiday, the body is often under significant metabolic strain due to increased consumption of fatty foods, red meat, and alcohol, combined with late nights and reduced physical activity.

Common consequences may include:

• A rapid weight gain of 1–3 kg

• Bloating and digestive discomfort

• Mild elevations in liver enzymes and blood lipid levels

• Blood pressure fluctuations

• Fatigue, reduced concentration, and sleep disturbances

This is the ideal time to “reset” your body instead of prolonging unhealthy habits.

1. Adjust Your Diet – Focus on Balance

During the first two weeks after Tet, consider the following:

• Reduce intake of animal fats and red meat by 30–40%

• Increase green vegetable consumption to at least 400 g per day

• Prioritize fish and plant-based protein sources

• Minimize alcohol consumption

• Drink enough water daily

Incorporate foods that support liver function and digestive health:

• Leafy greens, broccoli, and artichokes

• Fruits rich in vitamin C

• Yogurt and probiotic-containing foods

Avoid extreme “detox” regimens or prolonged fasting, as these may disrupt metabolic balance.

2. Resume Exercise – Gradually Increase Intensity

Avoid high-intensity workouts immediately after a prolonged break.

During the first 7–10 days:

• Walk 30 minutes daily or approximately 3 km

• Perform gentle morning stretching

• Practice light yoga or Pilates

After this initial phase:

• Engage in cardio exercise 3–4 times per week

• Incorporate resistance training to rebuild muscle mass

3. Support Mental Well-being

Post-holiday blues are common after extended breaks and may manifest as:

• Reduced motivation

• Difficulty concentrating

• Low energy levels

Strategies to restore balance:

• Set clear Q1 goals

• Re-establish a consistent sleep schedule

• Reduce screen exposure before bedtime

• Maintain regular physical activity and positive social interactions

The first 2–4 weeks of the new year represent a critical window to restore physiological balance and lay the foundation for a productive, healthy year ahead.

Post-Tet health care is not merely about weight management, but about establishing sustainable lifestyle habits.
